Job Description Summary

 

The Director of Tax in the Finance department at STEMCELL is responsible for leading the tax strategy and compliance activities for our global organization, and overseeing the tax related policies and procedures for the Tax function in meeting the regulatory requirements and managing the day-to-day tax activities to meet the financial obligations of STEMCELL’s business activities. Responsibilities include the organization’s worldwide tax planning, reporting, audits and compliance. This leadership role provides direction, coaching and mentoring to the Finance team either through projects, initiatives and/or ongoing operational financial and tax related support to the business. This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer and is based at our West 7th Avenue, Vancouver office.



Job Description



Duties and Responsibilities

 

Operational Management

  • Lead the tax strategy and compliance activities globally through effective working relationships within Finance and with other functions across the organization:
    • Develop, implement and present the global tax strategies and positioning, including acquisition structuring, to the Executive Team and external auditors.
  • Responsible in overseeing and managing the tax reporting and analysis:
    • Develop and monitor transfer-pricing policies and agreements, ensuring proper documentation to compliance requirements.
    • Lead and ensure the compliance of all global statutory tax requirements, including overseeing the preparation and/or reviewing all local and foreign tax returns.
    • Manage the tax accounting and reporting, including reviewing the worldwide tax provision, valuation allowance, and deferred tax account reconciliations.
    • Oversee sales, use and property tax reporting, VAT and other non-income tax issues.
    • Oversee and effectively manage the process for and preparation of the organization’s Canadian Scientific Research and Development program returns.
    • Continually monitor, track and report out on the existing and proposed tax legislations and related changes that could impact our operations.
    • Ensure compliance with internal controls, policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for the tax evaluation and reporting of exposures and risk management across the organization, including the ability to identify and implement highly efficient solutions.

 

Team Management

  • Assess and evaluate training needs of direct and non-direct reports of the Tax team; ensure training and development needs are met within department plans and budgets.
  • Manage and evaluate direct reports through regular one-on-one and team meetings; conduct and document performance reviews (quarterly goals and annual reviews); make compensation recommendations for direct reports in accordance with Company policies and practices.
  • Responsible for conflict resolution within the team and use of negotiation skills to reach consensus or, where consensus is not possible, escalate for decision.
  • Ensure all corporate and departmental legal obligations, policies and procedures as well as ethical and environmental principles are understood and followed by the team.
  • Interact with other senior management in the department to influence and negotiate in sensitive, complex and/or conflicting operational, management and staffing situations.
  • Propose recommendations to the team organizational structure and reporting; communicate the change(s) effectively and manage impact of the change(s) with guidance from the higher level Manager.
  • Lead in people development initiatives, through mentoring, coaching and performance management, to increase individual and team bench strength.

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration or related field; an advanced degree (MBA) is preferred.
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in the Tax function, preferably in corporate finance. Biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry experience is an asset.
  • Professional designation of CPA (CA, CMA or CGA) is required.
  • Significant depth of knowledge and experience in Canadian, US and global tax.
  • Strong understanding and working knowledge of IFRS and GAAP accounting for income taxes.
  • Proven track record of managing global service providers to ensure work is completed on time, with quality and on budget.
  • Experience with tax planning for private enterprises is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership capacity of a tax function or team.
  • Experience with M&A due diligence, integration and structuring transactions.
  • Experience working with an ERP system and hands-on experience with accounting software packages.
  • Advanced proficiency using MS Office, specifically Excel including use of pivot tables.
  • Structured, disciplined and organized; a critical thinker with demonstrated process improvement skills; proven analytical / quantitative skills are required.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral); communicates in a clear, concise and organized manner; listens to others to obtain information.
  • Proven experience building strong relationships with senior management, external providers, business partners etc. Ability to work across reporting lines and across geographies to advance strategic direction of the business.
  • Experience working in a high volume and fast paced environment with overlapping priorities and deliverables.
