Microsoft maintains a global tax planning and compliance strategy that is administered and coordinated at the Microsoft Corporate level, as part of the Corporate Tax Department, under the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the Company. This design assures proper coordination and implementation of appropriate policies and procedures.

Tax is responsible for Worldwide Tax Reporting, Compliance, and Planning, including the technology and process functions to support the coordination of the worldwide tax functions. There are seven major functions within the Tax Department. 1) Tax Affairs; 2) International Tax and Transfer Pricing; 3) Tax Reporting; 4) Tax Litigation; 5) Tax Planning and Tax Controversies; 6) Indirect Tax; and 7) Tax Process and Technology.

This position will lead the Tax Department’s US GAAP Income Tax Accounting team. This is a highly visible position with direct contact with Microsoft business leaders. The Senior Director is expected to work collaboratively with other members of the Tax Department to provide tax reporting data, support, and leadership to increase department efficiency and shareholder value.



Direct Microsoft’s Worldwide ASC 740 Income Tax Accounting team
Build automatic and scalable income tax accounting models leveraging tax reporting software, artificial intelligence and advanced excel functions
Automate global tax account JE and tax account reconciliation process
Implement a scalable efficient income tax accounting process to accommodate Microsoft’s multinational operations and global income tax reporting needs
Present excellent audit files to enable a fast external auditor sign off
Take steps to minimize audit risk associated with positions taken on US Federal and State tax returns
Evaluate alternative interpretations of key provisions in the US Internal Revenue Code using excellent professional judgment.
Build relationships with Microsoft finance professionals to ensure that tax reporting is based on complete and accurate information
Provide audit support to the Tax Controversies group
Overall accountability for maintenance and compliance of key SOX controls related to US GAAP income tax reporting
Coach and educate finance and business partners in US GAAP income tax reporting as necessary.
Provide leadership, communication, education, mentoring and coaching to Microsoft’s finance professionals in the understanding of Microsoft’s US GAAP income tax reporting process and results
Scrutinize, challenge, and propose change to existing process and procedures
Be a key participant within the global Microsoft’s tax group identifying, analyzing and implementing the best solutions for the company as a whole
Build, develop and maintain an excellent network of expert advisors and consultants
Keep up to date with tax legislation, SEC Regulations, and US GAAP changes, practice and global developments
Monitor other companies’ approaches to tax reporting to determine best practices


Minimum Qualifications:

15+ years of experience with a Big 4 accounting firm and profitable multinational high-tech companies
Must have hands-on experience with implementing Tax reporting software, building advanced scalable US GAAP income tax accounting models, automating tax account JE and reconciliation process for multinational profitable high-tech companies
Deep hands-on experience with reflecting extraordinary accounting events through various automatic or semi-automatic income tax accounting models
Expert knowledge of ASC 740 and IFRS
Strong knowledge of US tax law and regulations
Strong knowledge of CorpTax
Strong database and desktop application ability (specifically SAP and MS Office)
Excellent leadership and management skills
Strong project management skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to collaborate effectively with team members and business stakeholders
Exhibit strong analytical thinking, ability to work in a fast-paced environment with excellent prioritization and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications:

Professional certifications (i.e., CPA)
MSA and/or MST
Previous experience in a profitable multinational high-tech corporate tax department
Previous experience in Big 4
