The Director of Tax will receive a generous total compensation package. Bonuses are awarded in recognition of individual and firm performance. As a Director of Tax at Company, you will provide strategic tax leadership and advice for the firm in a number of key areas, including tax procedures, tax trends, and compliance with tax policies and laws. You will partner with the Chief Tax Officer and other Directors of Tax to effectively manage the tax-related functions of the firm and, as appropriate, of the firm’s partners. The Director of Tax also supervises and works collaboratively with a team of Tax Managers to develop innovative tax processes that support department goals in alignment with overall firm strategy. You will support the planning and management of tax team activities while accomplishing these and other critical functions including: 

Tax Strategy and Innovation: 
  • Collaborating with the other Directors of Tax and the Chief Tax Officer to develop and deliver on the tax department’s overall strategies, goals, and objectives.
  • Developing strategic tax initiatives — including defining, implementing, and ensuring compliance with all key policies relating to tax and finance procedures (and any other defined policies relevant to the department), across all firm offices.
  • Providing strategic advice and feedback to the Chief Tax Officer regarding current tax laws, regulations, policies, and procedures in all office locations, including their potential impacts and opportunities across the firm.
  • Developing, recommending, and implementing local and global tax policies and systems that will sustain the firm’s competitiveness.

Tax Department Administration: 

  • Defining, planning, implementing, and reviewing the performance of the Tax Department’s projects, as necessary.
  • Ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local governmental tax laws and regulations.
  • Developing and maintaining a compliance schedule of all national, state, and local tax returns.
  • Supervising and managing tax audits.
  • Participating in acquisition analysis.
  • Acting as prime liaison with the firm’s outside tax advisors.
  • Developing tax educational programs for lawyers and staff.

Tax Department Leadership: 

  • Overseeing a team of tax managers and ensuring they are appropriately organizing, assigning, and coordinating the work of the tax staff to meet department objectives in a timely fashion.
  • Developing and supervising his or her staff by performing a multitude of responsibilities, including but not limited to, hiring, assignment, training, evaluation, discipline, termination, and salary and bonus administration.
  • Leveraging the local Human Resources Department to meet tax talent management needs, including but not limited to: recruiting, onboarding, professional development, and performance improvement.


The successful Director of Tax must have excellent leadership and communication skills, well-developed interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in a team environment with a strong customer-service focus. The Director of Tax will have the ability to use independent judgment and discretion when making the majority of decisions, and the ability to manage work of others to ensure compliance and accuracy.
