This is a newly created position at Exelixis as we build the Tax department. The Senior Director, Tax will lead a team of two and become the primary resource for our growing company. This role will be responsible for all aspects of the Company’s tax related-needs, including but not limited to: tax compliance with federal and state agencies, quarterly and annual tax provisions, compliance with Sarbanes Oxley, quarterly and annual financial audits and tax planning. This position will work closely with other members of the Finance and Accounting teams including SEC reporting, GL, FP&A and other members of management. This position will advise management and lead all strategic planning opportunities for the Company.

Exelixis is located in South San Francisco, CA and will be moving to Alameda, CA around June 2018.

Position Requirements 


  • Manage all tax matters for the company.
  • Lead Tax team to compute and record quarterly and annual tax provisions; responsible for all income tax-related disclosures in the 10-Q and 10-K filings.
  • Advise senior executives on tax developments and strategies that may impact the company.
  • Interact with outside consultants on tax returns, tax studies (e.g., R&D credit analyses, transfer pricing, and etc.) and other technical tax questions.
  • Manage all tax compliance issues including sales and use tax, property tax, federal and state income tax filings.
  • Assist FP&A with forecasting and budgeting needs; and
  • Special projects as needed.


  • Manage two other members in the Tax team.


  • BS/BA in Accounting or Finance, MST and/or CPA preferred;
  • Big 4 Accounting firm experience a plus;
  • Minimum of 15 years of tax experience including at least 3 years’ supervisory experience with BA/BS or a minimum of 12 years of tax experience including at least 3 years supervisory experience with MST and/or CPA in a corporate setting
  • Exposure to fast-growing publicly traded companies preferred;
  • In-depth knowledge of ASC 740;
  • Detail oriented, analytical and able to manage multiple tasks in a fast paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, including excellent verbal and written communications;
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word and Power Point


  • Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. May also work on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors.
  • Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
  • Collaborate with key contacts outside own area of expertise.
