The Payroll Tax Specialist is responsible for assisting the Controller with the federal and state tax reporting for payroll clients in a fast-moving, complex payroll environment.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong knowledge of payroll tax filings, quarterly and annual reconciliations of tax payments, and experience with electronic file uploads to state agencies. You have the ability to meet deadlines and work with accuracy under volume pressure, and possess excellent analytical, mathematical & organizational skills.

Essential Functions:

  • Transmit weekly, monthly, and quarterly payments to appropriate taxing agencies
  • File federal/state/local withholding and unemployment tax returns online via agency websites
  • Analyze & reconcile quarter-end/year-end tax reports
  • Process W-2’s
  • Research and resolve federal, state and local tax notices and issues
  • Responsible for setup and maintenance of state and local tax rates in the payroll system
  • Track tax locations and register for new locations as necessary
  • Post tax payments in accounting system

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Understanding of payroll tax requirements/compliance. Must be able to work within a fast-moving, complex payroll environment
  • Experience with online data transmittal, payments, census data, and reports
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills
  • Clearly communicates orally and in writing
  • Advanced skills with Excel
  • Exhibits strong time management skills and high attention to detail
  • High level of integrity and ability to maintain strict confidentiality of information
  • Ability to work accurately individually and as a team member


  • Minimum 2-years’ experience in multi-state payroll tax
  • Associates Degree required
  • Experience with ThinkWare Payroll Software is a Plus
