Under the direction of the Controller, this position is responsible for managing tax functions and the preparation of tax returns and related reports to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations. Minimizes tax liability through sound and informed application of tax laws and regulations permitting alternate treatment of taxable items. Determines the tax consequences of the Company’s past or proposed actions. Informs corporate tax strategy to minimize tax costs. Establishes a strong working relationship with business units throughout the Bank as well as with all levels of management, customers, vendors, independent accountants and the IRS. Ensures business unit’s compliance with applicable laws, regulations, regulatory requirements and Bank policies and procedures, including but not limited to those related to Anti-Money Laundering laws and regulations, Bank Secrecy Act and USA PATRIOT Act.

  • Monitors the tax environment and analyzes the Bank’s position to develop and execute corporate tax strategy. Minimizes tax liability through sound and informed application of tax laws and regulations permitting alternate treatment of taxable items. Determines the tax consequences of the Company’s past or proposed actions. Suggests methods of reporting the facts and recommends that projected actions follow patterns designed to minimize tax costs.
  • Manages the preparation of federal, state and local income, franchise, sales and or property tax returns. Responsible for determination of tax compliance requirements and formulation of policies and procedures to meet those requirements in the most efficient manner for the overall company as well as individual business units.
  • Works with federal and state tax auditors to respond to information and document requests for the corporation. Communicates with IRS, attorneys, tax specialists, external auditors and internal auditors to ensure tax and tax-related SEC reporting requirements are met in a timely manner.
  • Complies with federal, state, local and SEC requirements by studying tax regulations, enforcing adherence to requirements and advising management on necessary actions. Develops and implements tax related internal controls, policies and procedures for the corporation.
  • Responsible for the management of all employees in the team, including staffing and scheduling, compensation, performance management, training and development. Goal is to attract, retain and motivate the team to achieve management business objectives and maintain a favorable employee relations climate. Responsible for the timely and effective management of People Services forms and documents relevant to immediate staff.
 Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or other related field; CPA preferred
  • Minimum 10 years of tax experience in a corporate environment
  • Five (5) years of management/leadership experience
  • Requires a strong working knowledge of tax functions, including federal and state tax laws and regulations, and other related matters
  • Demonstrated proficiency and expertise with personal computers in a networked environment and Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) or similar software
  • Knowledge of or ability to use tax and Bank software and systems
  • Requires relational database knowledge, strong spreadsheet proficiency and analytical skill-set
  • Must possess strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills, including presentation skills
  • Able to express complex ideas in concise and simple terms
  • Requires ability to conduct formal meetings and presentations
  • Must have excellent problem solving skills and be able to develop effective solutions that consider efficiency, internal controls, and impact to financial results
  • Requires the ability to make projections and exercise sound judgment
  • Able to work effectively with department staff, as well as those outside immediate area
  • Must be analytical, detail oriented, organized, and independent
  • Able to meet deadlines and handle multiple priorities, while managing group
  • Able to work flexible hours including holidays, weekends and evenings as needed
  • Must be able to provide own transportation or to operate a vehicle with a valid driver’s license, and able to commute as required
  • Able to travel by air
