General Responsibilities

Job Purpose
The Director, Indirect Tax Audit is responsible for the representation, management and disposition of North American (US and Canada) indirect tax audits for The Hertz Corporation and its subsidiaries.

Key-result areas
  • Successful and timely completion of sales, use, value added (VAT) and other indirect tax audits for US and Canada operations
  • Gather, evaluate and summarize financial data in preparation for audit including reports of business; general ledger detail; fixed asset listings; sales and purchase invoices; rental records; accounts payable/accounts receivable journals and various other sources of enterprise data; evaluate and determine risks, benefits and probative value of the information
  • Assess and quantify overall tax exposure; identify areas of risk; devise strategies for effective defense; determine favorable settlements; negotiate with auditors and their supervisors to determine possible solutions to unfavorable audit findings and mitigate potential liabilities
  • Respond to information document requests, inquiries and requests for corporate data
  • Review and analyze preliminary/final audit assessments; reconcile assessments or workpapers to tax returns to identify areas for dispute and likelihood of success
  • Prepare formal petitions concerning issues in question; engage outside counsel/advisors, as necessary
  • Represent Company at administrative hearings and both formal and informal conferences
  • Coordinate and oversee on-site and off-site audit visits and meetings
  • Establish and maintain reserves as required under FAS 5; coordinate tax analysis within other members of the tax department as well as regional controllers and other accounting/finance staff
  • Oversee Company exemption certificate and exempt sales document collection, indexing and processing; oversee company use tax policies and procedures
  • Handle internal audits; assist with SOX compliance testing to include SSAE 16s for all external consultants, and interim and year-end audits
  • Ensure compliance of regulatory requirements; perform periodic testing of tax billing systems
  • Identify opportunities for process and automation improvements; assist with implementation of such improvements.
  • Perform tax research as needed; draft and maintain memos to file, corporate tax policies and other documentation

Mandatory Requirements

Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
CPA and/or JD strongly preferred
Professional Experience:
Minimum of eight (8) years of experience practicing indirect tax with at least four (4) years of indirect tax audit defense
Big Four accounting or equivalent law firm experience preferred

  • Strong background in tax audit representation, with a concentration on indirect tax matters
  • Strong knowledge of sales and use tax policy, procedures, rules and regulations in both the US and Canada
  • Knowledge of FAS 5; SOX compliance and internal audit processes and procedures within a publicly-traded organization
  • Familiarity with Accounting and Tax software systems
  • Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Excellent planning, prioritizing and problem-solving skills within a large organization
  • Can-do attitude; willingness to work under occasional tight time constraints
  • Ability to maintain complex audit calendar and meet multiple simultaneous deadlines

  • Extensive experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.).
  • Experience with tax research software
  • Familiarity with Vertex or other sales and use tax compliance software helpful
  • Familiarity with PTMS, One Source, or other property tax compliance software helpful
