The Senior Tax Associate reports directly to the Tax Director and is responsible for the supervision of an internal tax associate and external tax preparers for the timely filing and internal reporting of income taxes for federal, state, and local jurisdictional compliance. This role will assist in some areas of indirect tax and will assist in finding innovative and efficient tax solutions to align our processes with deadlines and the business objectives for the Company.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist Manager in review complex partnership, REIT, and corporate federal, state, and local income tax returns for JVs, Funds, and Management Partnerships
  • Analyze income tax considerations for new and dissolving deals and managing compliance listing for internal and external preparer deadlines
  • Be a trusted advisor to internal stakeholders on a variety of complex income tax issues
  • Responsible for dispersing accurate legal and financial statement information to external preparers requiring coordination of data from multiple internal departments
  • Facilitate discussions, answer questions, and manage relationships with external tax preparers
  • Supervise and direct the workload for third party tax preparers
  • Provide support and innovation efforts for continuous improvement and efficiencies of the processes and methodologies used in the tax department and between third party preparers
  • Work with others in the tax department to properly document policies and procedures for the tax department and third party preparers
  • Responsible for documentation and response on all notices and/or working with third party preparers to resolve
  • Responsible for documentation and response on all audits as well as organizing the research and data for resolution
  • Identify and meet Company needs, provide support, and reduce risk by leveraging the internal range of services and extensive external resources for various lines of service
  • Look for ways to facilitate tax department savings and engagement team internal/external costs
  • Participate in discussions, webinars, be involved in training for the development and motivation of the internal tax team when needed
  • Provide guidance and technical assistance to internal departments with regard to income tax issues as they arise
  • Ensure all income tax compliance and related support is prepared and filed timely
  • Responsible for accounting for income taxes (SFAS No. 109) for all partnership level income taxes (including TX Franchise Tax) as applicable to legal entities
  • Support the Manager and Director with research for technical memos when necessary to document income tax legislation or issues, or assist in documenting income tax matters
  • Assist in other projects as necessary
  • Work with others in the tax department to attract, develop, and retain talent to improve efficiency of group
  • Stay current, research, and plan for current law and changes to income tax legislation
  • Work with others in the tax department to make the Company “best in class” in terms of tax efficiency; this will result in better service to shareholder partners, community joint venture limited partners, separate managed account investors, and future investors in to-be-created funds (i.e. OEF, CEF)


Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, tax, or business
  • Preferred to have an advanced degree such as Masters of Tax or Accounting
  • 2-3 years of Large Public Accounting firm experience preferred
  • Experience in the real estate industry – partnership focused
  • Exposure to state and local income tax compliance
  • Introductory experience with tax planning, tax analysis, and tax research
  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Excellent presentation and communications skills


Required Licenses

  • Certified Public Accountant
